Tree Contractor Planting Tips

When’s the Best Time to Plant Trees?

Ask any reputable tree contractor, and they will tell you that trees are considered big-ticket items that can add value to your home; by some estimates, a mature tree can add up to $10,000 to a property.

So it is important that they are planted when they are most likely to survive.

Types of Trees and When to Plant Them

Bare root trees:

These trees are removed when they are dormant and stored in a moist place, then shipped bare of any soil. Because the roots are naked, these trees need to be planted in spring so they won’t suffer any winter injuries. However, more importantly, plant these trees when you get them; the trick is to order them at the right time, so they will arrive when they have a good chance of surviving.

Container trees:

These trees are grown in pots or burlap wrapping, and their roots are covered in soil. They are not as fragile as bare root trees, so the timing is not as important. Plant whenever your tree has time to establish roots before extreme temperatures, such as hot or cold, can stress it.

Deciduous trees:

These are easy, as they will tell you when they are going dormant by dropping their leaves. They need to be planted in the fall and keep them watered even through the winter months.

Evergreens:

These need to be planted in the early fall or late spring; basically any time there is not extreme heat.

Conifers:

These cone-bearing trees are susceptible to cold weather because their needles start to lose their moisture even though the tree is sleeping if you live somewhere where frozen soil stops water from getting to the roots, plant in spring.
